Opium scale, South East Asia
Opium (or gold) scale with plates and fulcrum in tortoise shell. Since the Europeans introduced opium as a bargaining chip with China, the use of this powerful drug rapidly expanded throughout the region, generating a large production of items used for its marketing and consumption. This scale comes almost certainly from a South-East Asian country and belongs to the second half of the 19th century. It is in excellent conditions, it works correctly and it is perfectly balanced; the two plates have a few very small chips on the edges. The wooden case is held closed by a curious "ribbon" of woven rattan.

Bilancino da oppio (o da oro) con piatti e fulcro in guscio di tartaruga. Da quando gli Europei introdussero l'oppio come merce di scambio con la Cina, l'uso di questa potente droga si fu rapidamente espandendo in tutta la regione, generando una grande produzione di oggetti adatti alla sua commercializzazione e consumo. Questo bilancino proviene quasi sicuramente da un paese del Sud-Est Asiatico ed appartiene alla seconda meta' del XIX secolo. E' in ottime condizioni di conservazione, funziona correttamente ed e' perfettamente bilanciato, piccole sclafitture ai bordi dei piatti. La custodia in legno e' tenuta chiusa da un curioso "nastro" di rattan intrecciato.
